Step 2 - SWOT Yourself

SWOT is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Although it’s a strategic management tool taught at Stanford and Harvard Business Schools and used by large multinationals, it can just as effectively be used in your own professional development as a leader.

This is a useful key to gain access to self knowledge, self-remembering, and self-honouring.  Start by listing all your Strengths including your accomplishments. Then write down all your Weaknesses and what needs to be improved.

Make sure to include any doubts, anxieties, fears, and worries that you may have. These are the demons and dragons guarding the door to your inner attic. By bringing them to conscious awareness you can begin to slay them. Then proceed by listing all the Opportunities you see available to you for using your strengths.

Finally, write down all the Threats or obstacles that are currently blocking you or that you think you will encounter along the way to achieving your dreams.

Step 3 - Follow Your Bliss

    1. Great A would love to hear the results. Do they mirror your own SWOT or are there any differences?

      There is always going to be something that hits a nerve when someone else is giving you feedback. I believe that the one that hits a nerve is usually the one that has to be fixed? (though people can get it wrong). Sounds like you expected it? and are going to try and explore further.

      I have did my own swot and awaiting feedback from colleagues, hopefully I have insight into what I need to change, but am sure something will come out of the blue!! It is the unexpected feedback I am going to work on (as long as it is achievable).

      Funny, my wifes company hired consultants for all staff to do 360 review, this has been interesting. We now spend some time on our journey in an out of work chatting about this, and using language such as emotional intelligence, leadership qualities, reflection etc.

      Well - she wont have a conversations about football!!

  7. Folks, have received Swot analysis from my manager, those i manage and colleagues on our management team. Nothing I didnt already know and was glad there were no horror stories out there in fact my manager who is very driven assertive and not behind the door at giving critique sung my praises (she doesnt for the sake of it)and she said that she genuinely struggled to come up with weaknesses. This give me such a buzz.

    Those i manage were also very positive as well as colleagues but there are lots of room for impovement. Main common areas for developent include;

    Communication - Need to improve on my written communication (I like to focus on verbal and try and avoid doing lengthy reports)

    Dealing with difficult situations - Need to stop brushing things under the carpet, think we all do this.

    Confidence in own decisions - sometimes I am not confident in my own judgement and making decisions

    What gave me the best satisfaction was the fact that I was aware of these, but now I will specifically foucus in trying to sort.

    My boss is going to work with me to develop strategies and mentor me with regards to implementing my leadership development plan.

    I think the leader in me is slowly but surely being awakened

  8. I carried out a SWOT analysis on myself with my colleagues, should have put head gear and a gum shield in before I asked!! The feedback generally; I was aggressive, that my tasks had to be done as a priority and that I had an authoritarian style of management/leadership. On a more positive note I was told I was honest, good listener, dedicated, loyal, approachable and had integrity. I don’t really manage that many staff at the minute so would ideally like to conduct the same SWOT again in a number of months taking into consideration the type of leader I want to be and I suppose emotional intelligence.
